In Memorium – Peter Poole (1931 – 2017)

Emeritus Professor Peter C. Poole passed away peacefully on 19 August 2017 in Perth Western Australia in the company of close family. He was a pioneer and visionary who was elevated to the Pearcey Hall of Fame in 2010. May he rest in peace and contentment. May his legacy inspire our lives and be used for the greater good of all.

  1. I worked for Peter Poole at the University of Melbourne in 1991. Indeed, he gave me my first start in the higher education sector that somehow lasted 25 years. I was located with the newly established Interactive Multimedia Learning Unit under the direction of (Prof.) Sandra Wills. I was in heaven: the latest tech and cool people to work with. Peter was a pleasure work for; clear and direct in his communications, yet approachable. He could also be very funny, in a dry sort of way. He had a been-there-done-that view of the world that was very appealing. And he worked hard, and not for the glory of it either. I was impressed how he could fulfill his duties as a lecturer and supervisor, while more or less directing the IT infrastructure of the University, at the same time helping establish and oversee Australia’s Academic and Research Network (AARNet). The man was truly an Australian legend.
